Féile an Pháta
Féile an Phráta (the Potato Festival) celebrates the importance of the humble potato or ‘spud’ in the diet and lives of the people of Íarthar Dhuibhne (West Kerry).
Local growers are very proud of their potatoes which are among the best in Ireland due to the sandy soil and abundant nutrients in the area. Each year over 100 growers compete for the honour and glory of becoming Laoch an Phráta (Potato Champion).
It’s hard to believe that the Spud Off has come around again and that wonderful family event is in its 9th year. There were some concerns amongst expert growers that the Spuds might not have been ready but the recent spell of fine weather had put an end to concerns and I can confirm that the Spud Off will go ahead on 8th July 2018.
The parish heats will take place between June 22nd and July 3rd
Tá an t-am san den bliain buailte linn arís & An Spud Off chugainn gan mhoill. Tá sé deacair a chreidiúint gurb í seo an 9ú bliain den bhFéile iontach seo.
Bhí baol agus imní orthu siúloid atá ag fás prataí mar gheall ar an droch haimsir agus an tionchar a bheadh aige seo ar barr prataí na blianna seo ach leis an dea haimsir go léir atá linn le cúpla seachtain tá na prataí ag fás go deas dóibh. Ba mhaith liom a dheimhniú go mbeidh An Spud Off ar siúl i mbliana ar an 8ú Iúil.
Reachtálfar na comórtas sna paróistí éagsúla idir 22 Meitheamh agus 3 Iúil agus beifear i dteagmháil le lucht eagraithe na gcomórtais sin gan mhoill.
