Where to Drink on the Dingle Peninsula

teach tábhairne bar, pub, public house, tavern

Having a drink in Ireland is usually a social event and whether your preferred tipple is a mineral water, a vintage whiskey or a cup of tea a bar or pub is your first port of call. Bars on the Dingle Peninsula are more than somewhere to drink. They are welcoming places for storytelling, romance, music and social interaction. Some are ancient places that carry memories and traditions of a time when bars supplied most of a community’s needs. Household goods, hardware, groceries and even coffins were stocked behind the panelled wood and smoke-stained veneer. Stories from today and long ago linger in the air like a mist around the characters perched on the polished bar stools. An teach tábhairne - The public house was just what it says on the tin - a place for all to gather, do business, gather supplies and mark life’s passing.

In more recent times the bar has become more hospitality based with food and music, tea, coffee and often overnight accommodation available in many establishments. Traditional music sessions lure the passing visitor into places offering warmth and soul and gentle conversation. Drink, seats, people, atmosphere, a football match, a cúpla focail and a chat with the locals are all part of the package. Visit a bar or pub while you are on the Dingle Peninsula and feel how time slows while the world outside waits.

Alcohol can also be purchased and consumed in licensed restaurant premises which may not have a traditional bar counter. Here there is provision of wine/champagne and beer to customers accompanied by food before, during and after a meal.

If you like to know where your drink is coming from Dingle Peninsula boasts it's very own independent distillery and Micro Breweries where you can visit, talk to the makers and sample their produce.

Live Music Sessions in Bars

Both instrumental music and song have a long tradition on the Dingle Peninsula. In recent times, with the increasing international interest in Irish traditional music, the area has become a mecca for traditional music lovers to the extent that many roving musicians have come to settle in the area and have blended their talents with those of the local native musicians.

Dingle Peninsula bars and pubs are known for nightly sessions of live traditional music. With local and visiting musicians joining forces these music sessions are spontaneous and fun and all are welcome. Even if it is pouring rain out there, step inside, order your drink and have your heart warmed with an uplifting tune.

For up to date details of live music sessions please see page 32 of free local Magazine 'West Kerry Live' available from shops and businesses.
